    The Wonder From Down Under

If you noticed I was AWOL for a while, it was because I was traveling in Australia for 3 weeks. LT gave me a great tour of the beauty of Victoria, and introduced me to her extensive family (). Just kidding, her family was wonderful, showering me with endless hospitality and Aussie cuisine. It was my first time down under, and it was spectacular. So different from what I'm used to here, both in the landscape, and the wildlife. In this thread I'm going to share some of wonders of what I saw with the Village.

Parrots abound in Australia. They're everywhere, and in huge numbers. It's so cool to see flocks of color constantly flooding the trees and streaking across the sky. You wonder how they escape predators, as when isolated in the sky they seem so easy to see with their vibrant colors, but then when you see them in the colorful trees and vegetation you discover how their colorfulness serves to conceal them. Often I'd hear them singling in a tree right in front of me, and it would take awhile to spot them.

While it will be MrsH going with MissH to Melbourne for a night this week and not me I really must get there when LT is there to meet the family as they sound like fun. CR how come your pics show me things I've never seen before in 60 years here haha. Although we are not that far from the coast as the crow flies it is too far for the lorikeet to fly but I do recall them, and their screeching, when we lived on the coastal strip.

I'm looking forward to more, lots more.

Yeah, BP, they are amazingly gorgeous birds. I'm sure I had tourist written on my forehead, as I was outwardly fascinated every time I saw them for the entire three weeks I was there, while the locals give them about as much notice as we do squirrels. Here's one more of the little beauties, before moving on to the next Aussie wonder.

I think I would love to visit over there. It seems like such a fascinating place with tremendous natural beauty.

This is the Kookaburra, Australia's own. His call is so distinctive, it almost sounds like he's letting out a gurgling laugh. He finds his way into much Australian story and song.

The calls are territorial in nature. So they "answer" each other

Great pic of the Kookaburra. I had been singing that song in both languages since I was like three and I never even knew what he looked like. He is a pretty bird.
