    Hey, Villagers!

The news is true: crashed on Saturday while coaching GS
turns at Liberty Mountain, PA. Caught an edge going around 40mph in wet, slushy snow. Trajectory was toward a tree and some rocks, so I tried to slow the fall. I managed not to hit the tree, but my right ski got stuck across the fall line while I had clockwise rotation in my torso.

I knew I was injured, so I didn't move AT ALL after I came to a stop. I waited for help to arrive - in the form of ski patrol and some of my fellow coaches. My crash was witnessed by the lift attendants, and as I was off the main trail, most passing skiers couldn't see me.

My femur broke, below the head, with a lot of displacement and some bone shards. Initial x-rays indicated damage to the hip/pelvis - luckily, that wasn't the case.

I was transferred from Gettysburg Hospital to George Washington University Hospital as my skiing speed called for a level one trauma treatment. So I got a nice, fast ambulance ride back to DC. ;-)

I had surgery this morning: four hours that I don't recall at all (thank goodness!). I should start weight bearing tomorrow, but no more skiing until next season. Cycling should be OK come spring.

I'll keep coaching the kids via video.

I'm glad to hear it is just the femur. Weight bearing tomorrow on a femur that was displaced yesterday. Ain't technology grand?! I seem to recall that femurs get nailed (that's what the docs call it). Is that what they did to you? Heal quickly.

Sorry to hear the bad news, hope you have a successful and speedy recovery. Good news is no encounter with the tree which could have posed obviously more problems. Regards, Dave

Wow Rudi. Sorry to hear that. Weight bearing today must mean you have some steel rods and screws in there huh?

Man, this place is turning into the walking wounded.

Heal quickly and we'll try to keep you entertained.

Sorry to hear you are injured. Heal fast and well. Kind thoughts and a virtual teddy bear to you.

Lucky you. Flying will involve an additional conversation with the TSA .

Will be interested to hear how it affects your riding.

Frequently they can take the rod out. It may only be a temporary TSA inconvenience.

Goodness Rudi. Get lots of rest and heal well. I guess we'll have to postpone our ski play date for next year.
